History:

Joshua Guthrie was born Seventeen years ago in Cumberland Kentucky. The Guthrie family was just starting to go when Joshua was born, and kept growing even after he was born. His two younger siblings had the job of looking after him while his mother was recovering and his father was working in the mines so that they would have enough money to live off of, Sam mainly with Paige just playing with his toys. Joshua's first year was a tough one for the family but they pulled through and once his mother was feeling better Samuel was sent to work out on the farm or sometimes with his father. Joshua grew up in a loving family and by the time he was able to walk and talk he was a handful, his parents called him something else but I will not repeat it. When he turned five his parents debated on sending him to a public school and instead opted to teach him at home, it was also around this time that he started to help around the house and with the farming. At an early age Joshua was put to work, it needed to be done and he was just the right age to do it. So in the morning he would wake up at dawn and go out and gather the eggs from the chickens, Sam and Paige would normally do something else. After bringing them in he would wash up for breakfast and eat it all rather quickly.

From there he would go out and do his chores all day, taking periodic breaks to get something to drink or use the restroom. In the evenings, when he was dead tired, he would come in and take a bath before eating dinner. After that he would sit down and read his books and take little quizzes his mother would make during the day while she cooked, cleaned, and took care of the kids. On the weekends he would lounge around the yard, following Sam around normally and bugging him to play a game or something, he looked up to Sam more than he did his father, or he would just climb a tree and read or swing. All in all he led a very nice and carefree life when he was young but that all changed one day when his father got ill. He was to young to know what was going on but he knew that it had something to do with his father's job out at the mine. His father became worse and worse as the days went by until finally he died, Joshua did not know how to cope with it and just did not talk for almost two months while the rest of the family pulled together and tried to move on as best they could. Because of their father's death, Samuel was forced to go to work in the mines, Joshua felt so bad about this and the morning Sam had to leave he spoke for the first time in a while and asked him not to go.

Sam gave Joshua a smile and told him it would be all right, and with a ruffle of his hair he went to work. Joshua was worried that entire day, afraid of the mines now because they had already taken one person he loved away, but that evening Sam came home and told everyone about the cave in. Joshua felt so good that Sam did not get hurt and than he heard that Sam had gotten a scholarship to a college and that he would be going away. This hurt Joshua but he was happy for Sam and knew that he would have to work twice as hard around the farm now. When it came time for Sam to leave Joshua did not even show up, he hid himself in the barn and just cried as his big brother, the guy he was looking up to was leaving. Once gone Joshua started to work harder around the farm to forget about things and soon he feel back into his old routine. He began to study harder and getting up earlier. He wanted to be more helpful to his mother and because of that he became smarter and also physically stronger, able to do work which used to take two people by himself. His thoughts of Sam and his father left and he found some new friends in the area and once again was leading a normal healthy life, but that would change soon. One morning while gather eggs from the chicken coup he began to sing a song that Sam and he used to sing all the time.

It brought a smile to his face and he just kept on singing while he was gathering the eggs. There was a tingle in his through which he cleared and with the next note that parted from his lips he was met with something that scared him. The sound of his voice was changed, it sounded like many people were singing together in harmony but he knew he was the only person in the coup. He looked around to see if Paige or someone was pulling a trick but noone was there, and he simply dismissed it as an echo. A few days passed until it happened again, he had not really sung anything since that day in the chicken coup, but while reading a book he absently started to sing to himself. Again the harmony returned but this time he did not stop singing, he had figured out that he was the one making all the harmony with his own words. He was happy and a little scared at the same time, he had always wanted to be different, like the people in the stories he wrote, but now it had come true. There was a knock on his door and his mother asked him to turn the radio off as she was trying to get the kids to sleep. He smiled some and told her he would and he just stopped singing. When out in the barn or field alone he would sing and listen to the music coming from his own lips and he found it amazing that he could actually do this, it was something strange and also very cool to him.

He played around with it for a while and never let anyone else know he could sing like that but something was about to happen which would change his life forever. It was Sunday, everyone was getting dressed for church and Joshua was not even thinking about what would happen that day as they drove to the church and got out. The service was beautiful and halfway into it the Preacher took out his hymnbook and asked everyone to turn to page 23. Everyone began singing and Joshua almost did until he remembered what would happen. His mother turned to him when he did not sing and gave him a look, when he did not start the look became worse until finally he looked down at the book. With a loud gulp and opened his mouth and closed his eyes and just sang. Everyone in the entire church stopped what they were doing and turned to Joshua, his voice carrying over a dozen different pitches and tones. He did not stop but he kept singing the hymn that was in the book, not opening his eyes to look. His voice was so sweet to the people around that they became mesmerized by it, and when he did open his eyes he was greeted with smiles and not faces of anger or hatred. Even though noone was angry his mother took him and the kids home. For the next few days they got calls about Joshua's voice and what had happened that day as they themselves cannot really remember.

His mother did not know what to say but instead went out one day. When she got home she had a small envelope and brought Joshua in to talk with her. She told him that she thought he needed a break from the farm and that in the envelope was a ticket to New York, where the last knew Samuel was going to college. She asked Joshua to go there and find Samuel and to stay a while, and to also get her son to write more often. He knew she was making this up and that she was trying to protect Joshua incase the people in the church did remember what happened. Two days passed as Joshua packed up and saying good bye to his mother and siblings got in a friend's car and was driven to the bus station. He boarded the bus heading for New York, with a few stops along the way, and went out on his own journey.
